There is no doubt that the Covid-19 crisis has major impacts on higher education. Fast paced changes with respect to the health situation of countries and regions requires institutions to constantly adjust their teaching strategies. As a consequence, educators are confronted with the problem that the way they can safely offer courses often changes within days or weeks. In many cases the necessity of fast […]
We previously introduced you to this-year edition of our E-learning Platform for Innovative Product Development (ELPID) project. The core of ELPID is a semester-long project-based engineering course in which teams composed of international students develop solutions for industrial partners with the support of the proposed e-learning platform. This year, the project task is to develop seats and seating arrangements for the new generation subway car […]
The conference paper “Identifying Indicators for the Use of Virtual Prototypes in Distributed Design Activities“, co-authored by Nikola Horvat, Niccolò Becattini, Tomislav Martinec and Stanko Škec, has been accepted at the CAD21 conference, to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from the 5th to the 7th of July 2021. This paper presents an approach to identify and validate indicators for the use of virtual prototypes (VPs) during distributed design activities. This study reflected on the usage […]

Cascini was presented on DESIGN2020 conference. The paper presents the original integration of ICT tools and e-learning platform into an infrastructure to support Project-based learning for a design class that is geographically distributed across different countries. 30 Mechanical Engineering students from 4 European countries […]
As representatives of the ELPID consortium, Stanko Škec and Niccolo Becattini participated in The Design Society Chat Room related to “Successful transition to online teaching”! They presented the preliminary outputs of the ELPID project and collaboration with companies Electrolux and Rold! For more details, please check the link below.
On Wednesday, June 10th, 2020, POLIMI representatives (Prof. Cascini and Dr. Becattini) organised the final workshop for the this-year edition of ELPID course. The final workshop was completely and seamlessly conducted in an online form (by using MS Teams platform) and gathered more than 70 participants from academia and industry. During the workshop, international teams that participated in this course revealed and presented their solutions […]
Nikola Horvat, PhD student from the University of Zagreb, tried out various existing eye-tracking tools in order to explore their functionalities to analyse benefits of the proposed e-learning platform. As such, GazeRecorder emerged as one of the very useful applications that can be used for that purpose. GazeRecorder is available as desktop or Web App version and uses a webcam to produce a heat map […]
With the initial ELPID workshop, this-year edition of ELPID course officially started. Students are familiarised with the design task given by Rold and Electrolux, and provided with necessary instructions to start working and collaborating in the virtual environment! Electrolux Open Innovation (https://open.electrolux.com/), Electrolux Global R&D Fabric Care and Dish Care and R-Lab (https://www.rold.com/research-innovation/r-lab/) propose two themes you will be asked to tackle during the project. […]
On the final day of the initial ELPID workshop (21.2.2020.) organised by POLIMI, students and educators visited several very nice laboratories in Campus Bovisa La Masa of Politecnico di Milano. Students and educators had a nice opportunity to listen to excellent presentations first-hand from researchers that actively conduct their studies in these labs. Students and educators visited many interesting labs such as: SPARK, I.DRIVE, Lego Factory and […]
Based on the experience from the first project year, we decided to slightly change the sequence of the activities in the second project year. We organised the ELPID workshop at the beginning of the course when all students from four different universities (POLIMI, TU Wien, University of Ljubljana, University of Zagreb) physically met from 17th to 21st of February in beautiful POLIMI campus in Lecco, […]
